...in the hearts of their customers?
Well, apparently Amazon.com does, and they're using that information for all sorts of things. Some of it good (e.g., developing new tools to spur sales), some of it (cue music) evil.
Good? Evil? I don't know. I do know that it's smart. By keeping track of what their customers purchase, even what their customers look at, Amazon is able to figure out what other items customers might be interested in, allowing them to suggest new purchases.
The lesson?
Getting to know your customers (with their permission, of course), pays.
