When we have big goals and big dreams, they often appear to us – in our minds – as both wonderful and overwhelming.... but today I'm gonna give you the technique for to avoid the overwhelm and still get things done.
I like to call this technique The Trick of One because it’s so amazingly simple, it almost seems like a trick.
Are you ready? Here goes...
The Trick of One:
Take your goal, your dream, and create a plan (or to-do list) of all the steps you need to take to make that goal real.
Chances are you've been thinking about your goal for some time, so I’m guessing you already have a pretty good mental checklist started. Now all you need to do is write it down.
Done that? Great.
Now, let’s review your plan/to-do list.
Look at all the individual steps and break them down into their smallest individual components. That is, make your plan even more specific by listing smaller action-steps.
You guessed it: Write it all down.
So now what you have is a fairly detailed, step-by-step list of the actions you need to take to turn your idea into real life. Good job!
That’s it for today… Let’s put your list aside and leave it alone until tomorrow.
(Whistling while time passes. -- Hmmm, this could take while…)
Okay, let’s just say it’s tomorrow.
Now, back to your plan…. Look at the first thing on your list and do it today!
Nothing else, just that one thing.
Then tomorrow, I want you to do the second item on your plan.
And the next day, do the third item.
And the next day, do the fourth item.
And the next day, do the fifth.
And so on...
Each day, be sure to cross out the completed steps on of your list with a bold colored marker so that you can see the progress you're making. You may get so excited by seeing this progress that you start doing more than one item on you list every day. –Go right ahead, I'm not gonna stop you!
So, stick with the trick of one every day and – before you know it – there will be nothing left to do except celebrate having accomplished your goal!
